Spring is officially here. Within a few short weeks, orders will begin going out to all of our Bareroot pre-order customers. We are expecting delivery the week of 3/30-4/5 for all the bareroot trees as well as our first bulk shipment of the Full Speed A Hedge American Pillar. We will be reaching out to everyone once your order is ready and the threat of frost/overnight freezing has past.
Some helpful tips on planting bareroot trees. Pre-soak the roots for 2-24 hours prior to planting. You want to over dig the width by about 3x the root ball size. Do not over dig the depth. The roots should sit on solid undisturbed soil with the root flair just above ground level. When backfilling, you want to fill the hole about half way and use water to mud in the first layer. Make it soupy. Let that drain out and then finish filling the hole. Add water to help fill in the voids.
If your tree is unstable after planting, add two or three T-posts. you want to stake the tree in the direction that it will receive the most amount of wind. Tree wraps or a cut section of old garden hose can be used with rope or wire to secure the tree to the posts. If you have questions, just email or call us.
You should water once a week for the first month unless it has rained for a few days straight. Watering can be reduced to once every two weeks for months 2-3 unless it’s abnormally dry or wet. Months 4-5 water once a month unless it’s abnormally wet or dry.
Mulch around the tree base (not touching the tree trunk) to help increase moisture retention.
Container trees are planted in a similar way. Instead of pre-soaking, take a knife and cut 1 inch into the sides of the root ball from top to bottom and all the way around. This will break any circling roots. Do the same thing on the bottom of the root ball. The rest of the instructions are the same.
